Safety and risk

What happens to my bonds if the platform shuts down?

Bonds bought through a SEBI registered platform settle through the exchange clearing corporation into a demat account in your name, so they remain yours and the issuer still owes you interest and principal if the platform closes. What you can lose is anything only the platform provides, such as Wint Wealth's sell-back or Grip's Sell Bonds Anytime, and if the platform also ran your demat you may have to move it.

Verified

Your bonds do not belong to the platform. On a SEBI registered platform, every listed bond trade must go through an exchange RFQ platform and settle through the clearing corporation (SEBI NCS Master Circular), and the bond lands in a demat account in your name. The issuer, not the platform, pays the interest and repays the principal. A platform closing does not change who owes you money; it changes how easily you can sell.

Who holds what?

  • Your money in transit. Grip says it does not hold investor funds (Grip), IndiaBonds says it does not accept or handle investor funds directly and money goes only to the clearing corporation's account (IndiaBonds T&C), and Stable Money says funds go exclusively to the clearing corporation's account (Stable Money T&C).
  • Your bonds. GoldenPi's FAQ says bonds stay in the investor's own demat and interest keeps going to their bank even if GoldenPi shuts down (GoldenPi).
  • Your interest. Issuers pay it. When App Store reviewers complained about missed interest, Wint Wealth replied that repayments come from the issuers (App Store).

What could I lose?

Features that only the platform provides:

PlatformFeature that depends on the platform
Wint WealthSell-back at a YTM up to 1% lower, only for bonds held in Wint's demat
Grip InvestSell Bonds Anytime after about 2 months, with a 0.25% charge
Stable BondsSell anytime, which its terms say is not guaranteed
InCred MoneyAnytime Liquidity after 21 days at a 2% cost

Sources: Wint T&C, Grip, Stable T&C, InCred terms. Without these, you would sell on the exchange like any other holder, which depends on finding a buyer.

What if the platform also runs my demat?

Wint (NSDL DP IN304633), Grip (IN304877), IndiaBonds (IN305103), Stable and Bondbazaar run their own depository participant and open the demat for you (Wint, Grip, IndiaBonds, Stable, Bondbazaar). Your holdings are still recorded at NSDL or CDSL, but you would need to move the account to another DP. This site has not verified that procedure. Bonds can be moved between demats today; forum users describe transferring REC bonds between depositories (TradingQnA).

Has a bond platform shut down?

No major one has shut outright as of 17th Oct 2026. Neo Wealth, Stable Broking and Sunrise Gilts closed their OBPP business on BSE voluntarily, and Stable continues on NSE (BSE OBPP list, Stable). Bondbay's websites returned errors on 17th Oct 2026 while BSE still listed it as active, with no closure notice found (Wayback Machine). GoldenPi agreed to be acquired by Oxyzo in May 2026 (Inc42), and BondsIndia renamed itself Digifinn (Digifinn).

Does registration matter here?

Yes. SEBI's caution of 19th Nov 2025 says unregistered platforms have no regulatory supervision and no complaint mechanism (SEBI PR 75/2025), and its Nov 2024 interim order told 3 unregistered platforms to stop offering unlisted NCDs to the public (SEBI order). Check the CAS from NSDL or CDSL each month to confirm every ISIN sits in your name (Groww pricing page advisory).

A platform closing leaves issuer risk exactly where it was. If the issuer defaults, see What happens if the bond issuer defaults?.
