Safety and risk
Are corporate bonds safe in India?
Corporate bonds in India are as safe as the company that issued them, the security behind them and where they rank for repayment; there is no deposit insurance and the selling platform is not liable. Defaults do reach retail investors: TruCap Finance NCDs sold through bond platforms went to CARE D on 18th Jul 2025, and from about 21st Nov 2026 every bond platform must show a Credit Risk-o-Meter based on the lowest available rating.

Safety is specific to each bond. A AAA rated PSU bond and a BB+ rated NBFC bond are both corporate bonds, and their risks are not comparable.
What decides how safe a corporate bond is?
| Factor | What to read | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer credit | Rating rationale from each agency | Repayment depends on this one company |
| Lowest rating | Every rating, not the best one | Split ratings exist, as with Hella Infra Market below |
| Rating direction | Outlook, watch status, recent changes | Ratings trail events; forum users cite IL&FS and DHFL, which were cut sharply in a short time (TradingQnA) |
| Security and ranking | Offer document: secured or unsecured, senior or subordinated | Sets the recovery order after a default |
| Covenants | Offer document and trustee filings | A breach can be an early warning while coupons are still paid |
| Liquidity | Exchange trade history | You may have to hold to maturity |
Split ratings are the clearest current case. India Ratings cut Hella Infra Market's NCDs to B+ Issuer Not Cooperating on 1st Oct 2026, while Acuité kept the same paper at A- on watch (India Ratings, Acuité). On 17th Oct 2026 Groww, Aspero, BondScanner and SMEST listed it at about 15% to 16% showing only the A- (Groww listing).
Do defaults actually happen to retail investors?
Yes. TruCap Finance, an NBFC whose NCDs were sold to retail investors through bond platforms, shows the full path. CARE cut it to BB+ from BBB- on 4th Jun 2025, which triggered acceleration under the trust deed; the required majority waiver was not obtained; the company missed its 16th Jul 2025 payment; and CARE moved it to D on 18th Jul 2025 with ₹72.28 crore of interest and principal unpaid (CARE). It repaid in stages, and the trustee confirmed on 23rd Oct 2025 that 6 ISINs had been redeemed with penal interest, while a separate ₹40 crore ISIN with a single holder remained in declared default (Catalyst Trusteeship). Mint reported about 1,100 investors owed about ₹55 crore across platforms (Mint, reported).
Not every warning sign ends in default. Satya MicroCapital breached a ₹870 crore net worth covenant on a 14.20% subordinated bond and received a qualified FY26 audit, yet paid every coupon through 12th Oct 2026 (Satya annual report).
What changes on bond platforms in Nov 2026?
SEBI's Credit Risk-o-Meter circular of 7th Oct 2026 takes effect 45 days after issue, around 21st Nov 2026. Every OBPP must then show a 6 level meter running from Lowest (AAA) to High or very high risk of default (B, C and D), use the lowest rating where several exist, print unsecured status in bold red and show Issuer Not Cooperating status (SEBI circular). See what AAA, AA, A and BBB mean.
Are government and PSU bonds safer?
G-secs, T-bills and SDLs carry sovereign or state credit, but their prices still move with interest rates, so a long G-sec sold before maturity can show a loss (TradingQnA). State guaranteed bonds depend on the issuer's health and the guarantee's terms, and forum users note that state backed bodies have defaulted before (TradingQnA).
Does buying through a registered platform help?
It protects you against the platform, not the issuer. The warning SEBI requires in every OBPP ad says investments are "subject to risks including delay and/ or default in payment" (SEBI NCS Master Circular). See what happens if the issuer defaults and secured vs unsecured vs subordinated.
